Food safety is of the utmost importance, and FSSAI CEO G Kamala Vardhana Rao has expressed grave concerns over the widespread usage of newspapers for food-related reasons. The ink used in newspapers is one of the main issues brought up by the FSSAI. This ink contains a number of bioactive substances that, when consumed, are known to be harmful to health. There may be health issues if the ink gets into the food. Additionally, dangerous substances like lead and heavy metals that are present in printing inks may slowly seep into food, causing serious health risks over time.
But it doesn’t stop there. Newspapers, exposed to various environmental conditions during distribution, can become breeding grounds for bacteria, viruses, and other pathogens.
