Special Session of Indian Parliament Sparks Controversy Amid Secrecy Over Agenda

The start of the thirteenth session of the seventeenth Lok Sabha and the two hundred and sixty-first session of the Rajya Sabha, both set to begin on September 18, 2023, were both officially announced by the Lok Sabha Secretariat. Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Pralhad Joshi announced the decision to hold this extraordinary session. However, he withheld the details of the agenda, sparking widespread rumours.
The Indian Parliament typically meets three times a year for its budget, monsoon, and winter sessions. Prominent Congress leader Jairam Ramesh called attention to the official agenda for the session, which only listed “government business” for each of the five days. He claimed that the opposition would aggressively demand attention to their issues and try to bring them up in every session.
