A destructive fire recently tore through a bus depot in a busy location in Bengaluru, leaving a path of ruin in the aftermath. Situated in the southern region of the city in Veerabhadra Nagar, the SV Coach Works caught fire on Monday (30/10/23), severely damaging about twenty-two privately owned buses. Thankfully, there were no casualties recorded, and the fire department’s quick action stopped the situation from getting worse. The incident unfolded in a dramatic fashion, as the roaring flames engulfed 22 buses belonging to various private bus companies. These once-perfect vehicles were reduced to charred ruins, and the fire’s intensity was further accentuated by explosive bursts from the diesel tanks of the buses. The burning bus tires added to the view, sending enormous clouds of dark smoke into the sky, visible from several kilometers away.

The depot, owned by an individual named Srinivas, is now at the center of attention as he is reportedly evading authorities, according to police sources. Eyewitnesses on the scene noted that the fire broke out around 11:30 am in the depot’s vicinity, close to PES University and situated just off the Outer Ring Road.

According to preliminary assessments, welding work being done in the depot is most likely what started the fire. According to a senior police officer, a spark started the fire, which the workers were unable to contain, leading to a rapid spread to adjacent buses. The flames picked up speed quickly, and even with everyone’s best efforts, they were difficult to put out. Soon after the fire control centre received the distress call at 11:45 am, the authorities moved quickly, sending seven fire trucks and between 80 and 100 firefighters to the area. Luckily, roughly 20 workers who were present when the fire started were able to escape safely.

The evident lack of proper fire safety precautions in the workshop is one unsettling feature of this incident. The lack of any fire prevention or control measures, apart from two fire extinguishers, greatly hampered attempts to put out the fire. The depot’s storage of combustible items made it more difficult to determine the precise origin of the fire. This regrettable incident comes soon after two days prior fire at Haj Bhavan and the October 18 fire at Mudpipe Cafe, which has increased awareness of fire safety in Bengaluru.

Following these occurrences, the authorities have launched extensive inquiries to determine the exact origins of the fires. These events serve as stark reminders of the significance of fire safety precautions and education, urging organisations and people alike to make the avoidance and mitigation of fires a top priority.
