India-Canada Diplomatic Tensions Rise Over Khalistan Leader’s Killing Allegations

Published

on

Diplomatic tensions between India and Canada have escalated in the wake of allegations by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau regarding the killing of Sikh separatist leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar earlier this year. In response to Trudeau’s claim that there was a “potential link” between Indian government operatives and the murder of Nijjar in British Columbia, diplomats from both countries have been expelled, raising questions about the effect this will have on bilateral ties and India’s reputation abroad. These actions have reignited the dispute over Khalistan, a long-standing point of friction between the two nations. India has charged Canada with giving Khalistani activists a place to live, escalating the diplomatic difficulty.

The 45-year-old Hardeep Singh Nijjar was shot and killed outside a Sikh temple in Surrey, a Vancouver suburb with a sizable Sikh community. He had been labelled a “terrorist” by India three years before he passed away because he supported Sikh independence in Punjab. Nijjar was allegedly involved in organizing an unofficial referendum in India to seek independence for Sikhs.

Foreign government involvement in the killing of a Canadian citizen, according to Trudeau, was described as an “unacceptable violation of our sovereignty.” India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) responded by dismissing any association between India and Nijjar’s murder as baseless and motivated. The MEA emphasised that these accusations undermine India’s sovereignty by drawing attention away from Khalistani terrorists and extremists who have sought refuge in Canada.

Subsequently, the MEA ordered the expulsion of a senior Canadian diplomat from India, citing concerns about Canadian diplomats’ interference in India’s internal matters and their involvement in anti-India activities. The Indian government had previously called on Canada to take action against anti-Indian groups operating within its territory, asserting that allegations of India’s involvement in acts of violence in Canada were unfounded and driven by ulterior motives.

The Khalistan movement calls for the establishment of Khalistan, an independent Sikh state that would be created out of Punjab and run according to Sikh beliefs. Even if there isn’t an ongoing armed uprising in Punjab, the Khalistan movement still enjoys support among Sikhs, especially those who live in countries with large Sikh populations, such as Canada, the UK, and Australia. The presence of Sikh separatists in various nations has drawn the attention of the Indian government.

Sikh activists have been involved in incidents in recent years, including the taking down of the Indian flag from the high commission in London and assaults on Indian diplomatic missions. In order to combat Sikh separatism, the Indian government has taken the initiative and detained several of its leaders. The strength of the Khalistan movement has, however, substantially diminished over time, with little political support in Punjab itself, according to experts. However, it continues to be a point of contention in India’s foreign policy.

As India and Canada grapple with the aftermath of these allegations and expulsions, the future trajectory of their bilateral relations and India’s global standing remain uncertain. Both countries continue to face difficulties as a result of the complex interplay of diplomatic tensions, historical resentments, and domestic politics surrounding the Khalistan question.

Sarah Burton has officially redefined Givenchy. In her Fall 2025 debut at Paris Fashion Week, the former Alexander McQueen creative director brought a feminine perspective to the legendary house, embracing strength, vulnerability, and emotional intelligence. This moment felt significant—not only because of Burton’s storied past but also because so few women currently helm major luxury brands.

A Tribute to Givenchy’s Heritage

Burton’s inspiration came from Hubert de Givenchy’s 1952 debut collection, known for its clean, graphic silhouettes. A recent discovery of the maison’s archival calico patterns further fueled her vision, leading to designs that balanced wearable ease with dramatic, couture-like elements.

The show opened with a black fishnet catsuit, a bold reset before transitioning into the essence of Burton’s Givenchy—a collection that honored the past while embracing modern femininity.

Key Looks & Defining Elements
